DIY Market Totes

DIY

Reusable cotton totes are so good to have. You can use them for the farmers market, as a grab + go bag, and of course the weekly Aldi runs. And it's easy to make your own tote bags! If you have a sewing machine and a little bit of time, this is a perfect summer project. Even if you're new to sewing, this is such a simple guide to start out on!

Things you’ll need—

  • 1 Yard of Medium or Medium-Heavy Fabric (Cotton canvas, linen, etc.)

  • Sewing Machine

  • Thread

  • Pins

  • Iron

  • Scissors

  • Chalk or Washable Fabric Marker

01. Cutting the Fabric

We'll start by cutting our 4 pieces of fabric.
The main bag size is 16” X 17”. Cut two of these.
The strap sizes are 28” X 3¼”. Cut two of these as well.

02. Sewing the Straps

Take one of your straps and fold it over with the right sides together. Sew along 1/4” away from the edge. Turn the strap inside out and use your iron to press it down. Sew another straight stitch right along both edges (this is called a topstitch).

03. Sewing the Bag

Next, take your two bag pieces and place them on top of each other with the right sides together and pin it in place. Sew three of the edges together, 1/4” away from the edge. Finish the edges of the fabric with a zig zag stitch right on the edge to prevent excess fraying.

04. Assemble the Straps

Fold over the top edge of your bag roughly 1 inch. Use your iron to press this fold down. Mark the center of your bag and then measure 3” over each way and pin the edge of your strap on the outside of each of these marks.

05. Folding the Straps

Fold the edge of your bag over one more time, again at 1 inch. This will encase the hem of your straps. Sew around the bottom fold of your bag, 1/8” away. Fold the straps upwards against the hem and pin in place.

06. Securing the Straps

Sew the straps in place with a square, 1/8” away from the edges. Flip your tote right side out and there you have it!
