Ideas for a modern Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s day itself has a pretty mysterious and dark history. It started in the Roman age after Emperor Claudius II banned marriage because he thought married men were bad soldiers. St. Valentine felt this was unfair, so he broke the rules and arranged marriages in secret. It’s unclear who St. Valentine was though most believe he was a priest. When Claudius found out that St. Valentine was performing marriages, Valentine was thrown in jail and sentenced to death. There, he fell in love with the jailer's daughter and when he was taken to be killed on February 14th, he sent her a love letter signed "from your Valentine".

While most people think of chocolate roses and a candlelit dinner, we like to think outside of the box around here. This year, Valentine’s day happens on a Friday. So it’s prime-time for some special plans. From a chill night indoors to a full day adventure, we’ve got some ideas up our sleeves. And don’t forget to check out our modern Valentine’s Day playlist on Spotify (linked below!).

  • Embark on a hike. Grab your rainboots and head outside to explore the love that mother nature has to offer. Take this time to breathe and focus on all the good in your life.

  • Host a dinner party. Invite all of your friends over for rosé cocktails and lots of cheese. Turn on some jazz and light all of your candles.

  • Have a spa day. Make it a self-love day; plan a full day consisting of a manicure, pedicure, deep conditioner and a face mask. If you’re spending the day with your loved one, check out the local couple’s massages!

  • Explore a new neighborhood. Make a playlist and walk around in an unfamiliar part of town. Grab a coffee at their local café and go shopping at their boutiques.

  • Get crafty. Actually try out the DIYs you have saved on Pinterest. Clear the kitchen table and make sure there are chocolate snacks!

  • Bake some goodies. Find some recipes that you know you shouldn’t eat but you want to - truly treat yourself. Bake a chocolate cake or 5 sheets of macarons. We’re not going to judge you.

  • Visit a museum or art gallery. Take this time to get out and see more of your community. Find your local art gallery or museum and wander the day away.

  • Take a pottery class. Get your hands messy and learn something new. Plus you get to take home a special piece of work!

  • Go for a picnic. Pack up some finger food and grab a blanket. Head to your favorite park and spend the day people watching or reading a book.

  • Try an escape room. Grab your friends or your partner-in-crime and test your luck. Escape rooms are popping up all over the place and they’re a great way to get immersed.
